Hi all!

I started listening to TWiT in 2015 and my fav show is The Tech Guy. It really helps me on my commutes. I also listen to “Security Now” and “iOS Today”.

Of course, I even listen to it sometimes… but I much preferred the daily version. The dynamic between Jason and Megan was marvelous.

Just so you know, when Google+ was announced to be on its deathbed lots of the Know How community were disappointed to lose access to all the discussions they had had over the years.

So I took it upon myself to setup a forums and the non-considerable task of converting the Google+ discussions.

Whilst I was converting the Know How group’s discussions I also archived some other Google+ community’s

These included the following:-

  • Know How
  • Coding 101
  • All About Android
  • This is TWiT

If you, or anyone wants to check them out then please visit the KITAS (Know-it-all’s) new forums over at kitas.tv

Hi All. I started in tech 40 years ago in the days of punched cards and mainframes and moved through various fields ending up with mobile devices, doing software development, testing, documentation and management. Can’t resist gadgets and getting more service out of old devices. Only got into podcasts this year, but already following a lot of TWiT ones because of the quality of the presenters and content.

I tend to read more than I post online, but I’m pleased to join what already feels like a welcoming and active community.

I have been watching Leo Laporte since 2002 (at age 14) when he hosted The Screen Savers on Tech TV. I even got Dish Network satellite and wired coaxial cable to an additional TV in the basement to a Satellite receiver to get it.

Then time went by, and I discovered The New Screen Savers via YouTube when they first started and watched the first episode live. I also attended one episode.

My personal story is this:
I started out with tech by programming buttons on TVs in Kindergarten at age 6, programming VCRs and using Windows 95 at ages 8-9, tinkering around with wireless video, filming home movies, among other RadioShack-bought projects ages 10-12. At age 13, I learned all about the internal parts of my PC and installed more RAM, a bigger HDD, and a CD-burner in 2001. Then when I watched Tech TV, the rest was history. That network got me so excited and really learned a lot. In high school from 2003-2005 I did everything from modifying video game systems like the original Xbox and PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, and Sega Saturn, learning web design in Dreamweaver and Photoshop, video editing concepts in Final Cut and Premiere, to getting a pretty sizable collection of rare music from using DC++ to connect to hubs.
When I was a Freshman at university in 2005, I got my first “PC fix-it” job and really learned a lot then. Used BitTorrent to “cut the cord” in 2006, living in Japan in 2008 and used push mail before messenger apps, learned about modem firmware unlocking in 2010 before I lived in Thailand for 4 months, etc.

I lived in San Francisco from 2012-2017 and worked as a contractor for Google where I picked up some software engineering skills, specifically Android. I still am learning about Android.

I have been living in Taipei, Taiwan since the beginning of 2018, and am a software documentation person. I will be learning more job skills at my current startup and hope to take those into my future.

Long time listener first time caller… normal blah blah blah here.
I remember watching Leo back in my first marriage and am now on my third and I have been married for at least 10 years with this one. So yeah a long time (back in the 90’s at least).

So just curious, who else here would set their VCRs to record Leo, and then record the audio to cassette tape so they could listen while they drove? I can’t be the only one.

Hello there! I’ve been a fan since the Tech TV days… I was on vacation in the Outer Banks back in 99 or 98 when I ran into Tech TV and @Leo . Once I got back home (DC) I dumped Comcast and switch to Direct TV since they had Tech TV. Thanks to @Leo for all the years of knowledge!
Cris.

Thanks for the welcome. Huge fan!! Some bits from my bio below:

Hello Twit-Land!!

I’ve been watching Leo and the gang since the Tech TV days and never found it dull.

I’ve got almost 30 years in IT as a career and always looking to learn new things and help others conquer tech whenever needed. I’ve been a Mac guy for many years now (to the horror of my wallet) and still love to play video games after all this time.

Some Bits:

  • My first simulator was an Apache Helicopter Sim on an IBM all-in-one
  • Harpoon was an epic game back in the day
  • Yeah…I dance with the devil and load the first Dev betas!!
  • I still believe in a world where tech makes things better…but maybe we need to slow back down some

Hello everyone, I’m from Mexico and doing a fast search on this topic i didn’t saw any fellow mexican but I hope that changes soon. I’ve always been a geek but of course here in Mexico i was never able to see Leo on TV, after learning more english i started listening to more american tech podcasts and videocasts and my favorites from those days were of course Diggnation and Epic FU and of course I kept hearing Leo’s name more and more and finally discovered the Twit Network and been happy with it since then (I miss a lot of shows).

Anyway I studied biology and specialized in microbiology but now I’m in the financial world. Nice to meet you all and I hope one day I can go to visit the Eastside studio and meet the Twit family.

If anyone wants to know about Mexico or the tech scene here (i also have a tech community) i’ll be happy to talk about it.

Hi guys. I’m a tech guy for my company since 1981. At one point I was actually paid to write COBOL. Now days I spend a lot of time doing G Suite and other admin tasks, since I’m the overseer of our helpdesk for a 1000 person international company. I’ve loved watching Leo and the gang since ZDTV.

I started in about 2010 at the start of iPad Today with Sarah Lane when I got the first iPad and was looking for information on the web and stumbled over the show.

Then moved onto i5 for the iPhone and MacBreak Weekly. I watch many shows now, sometimes more sometimes less each week, but always MacBreak. Really miss Alex being on the show as I loved his views and insights.

Looking forward to a few of the new shows coming up.

Hello all! I am an Electrical Engineer by trade, but an IT Pro by choice. Love the TWiT network, such excellent quality coming from some excellent people. In a world of politicians biting each other’s heads off, nice to come back and relax and enjoy some relaxing tech programming.

I was the local tech guy back here in El Paso, TX for many years, and someone said, why don’t you just start a business and get paid for that service! So I did, I now give the same great service with Computer Bailouts. I love tech so much that I had to do this as a side business.

I listen to TWiT, Security Now, Tech Guy, and TWiG on a weekly basis, plus some of the others when there is a big announcement.

I got to travel to Petaluma to meet Leo and the team back in August 2019, such a great and welcoming experience!

Glad to be here and be a part of this new TWiT community!

Hello TWiT army!

Been a tech junkie my whole life. I love trying out the bleeding edge tech, beta testing, etc. I was taking apart computers at 5 because I was bored.

I work for Safety & Security for the local school district. Electronic door access control, two-way radio networking, and security cameras are my primary focuses, secondary in networking.

Been listening to TWiT since about 2016. Discovered Security Now while researching a good password manager and stumbled across Steve’s episode talking about Lastpass. Been hooked on TWiT ever since.

Hmm. My story. At 14, got one of the first ‘Programming’ merit badges in scouts. ~1974. Wrote a program in RPG replicating a simple payroll type process (Pay = (hrs*rate)-taxes) on 96 column cards. Had to do a bunch of sample input cards, and get the report printed. Worked for my dad after school & summers. I was writing the payroll checks (not my program  ) for the local Burger King while my friends were flipping burgers there.

Some years passed, and I was in SF for an IBM education seminar, and my partner in the class gave me the ‘I like the way you work, I’ll call you’ line. Well, he did, and I came to Apple in 1983 in the Data Center (Yes, I have 1989 earthquake stories). 8 years there, and into my own consultancy. Racking & Stacking, programming, remote support, system design to be outsourced. If you needed it done, I did it. If I didn’t know how to do it, I either found a resource that did, or I learned how to do it.

A few years ago, a friend was looking for team members, and I took a position at a large company. It’s been nice to have the regular paycheck, but there is also a certain loss of freedom.

For TWiT, I’ve been listening to Leo on the radio in the SF bay from when he was on another large talk radio station in the area. Have been listening to the podcasts pretty much since the beginning of the network.

Was especially sad to have Father Robert recalled, and Know How was one of my favorites. (I’m a tinkerer, if you haven’t figured that out by now). I met him and Leo (and Lisa and some others) at the Maker Faire in San Mateo a couple of years ago. I’m missing Megan, but I really like the new hosts also.

I mostly listen later, via the Apple Podcast app. I download the video for most, but mostly just listen (except when something especially visual is on).

Cheers to all.

I really love that this community was created! I’ve only been listening to a few of the shows for the last few months, but am now an ardent fan. I’ve always tended to listen to the shows afterward - unfortunately never live - so the chat wasn’t something that i could participate in. Now, with this forum, i can join in the fun!

As far as my intro…
I’m a former web developer who remembers first getting on irc in early 1992 and coding my first web page around 1995…I don’t get to code much for work anymore, but do get to do some fun with digital innovation (I’m in management, so have others to do coding - not ideal, but hey, it’s a living.) Off the clock, i get to play with my linux machines, raspberry pi, etc.

Oh, getting back to this community: it’s great that this is forum-like…I come from the period of the interwebs where html was written by hand - and we liked it! But also, i loved the web of old where things - like a positive community - were on their own, not controlled by a large silo behemoth social media platform. So, i look forward to our collective engagement!
