Re: Google’s 5 million file limit, I’d bet that decision was a direct result of a cost-saving initiative on Google’s part. Part of my job involves hosting data for legal ediscovery teams (filecounts in the Billions), and the overhead of a filesystem with a large blocksize can be devastating to the bottom line. We were facing an inefficiency of about .64 with a legacy storage solution before we had to do something, and we’re now just barely at 1.0 with compression and de-dupe practices in play. I’m sure some middle manager got ahold of their storage efficiency number and saw what they thought was low-hanging fruit.
