Trying to figure out what's going on with my computer

So I got the computer back, I’ve been setting the system back up (reinstalling the software I had on it, etc). The computer (except the cursor) just froze again.

2024-04-12T19:16:00Z: It just froze again, is there something I can run to test the peripherals for defects? Also, forgot to mention that it boots and logs in normally.

What does this error mean?

Not getting that error anymore but whenever I reboot the system this comes up:

This has been going in for 6 months. I would have thrown it in the river by now

Once the holidays ended I got so focused on school that I didn’t have time to deal with it.

Whatever caused that error (I asked about) seems to have gone away, my hypothesis is that at some point one of the previous issues causes some apps to get corrupted (when I got the computer back I noticed that there were entries in the Start Menu that didn’t lead to anything) and that reinstalling the broken apps resolved the more recent error.

2024-04-17T22:56:00Z: When I first published this post, I was experiencing minor signal issues with my computer’s display. At first, I thought it was just a problem with the monitor not waking up, which started after Adobe Illustrator stopped responding. However, the problem persisted even after trying to wake it up for a while and taking a break. I eventually decided to restart the computer and checked the Event Viewer for any errors. Surprisingly, there was no record of anything between when the problem started and just before the system rebooted. At first, I assumed it was just a display problem since my Stream Deck and the system’s RGB lighting were still on.

I am still facing issues with my system. It was working fine until last Thursday when it randomly started freezing again. There doesn’t seem to be any particular pattern related to what I’m running or a specific time when the system is freezing. The odd part is that when it freezes, the mouse cursor still moves. I have tried resetting the computer, but I get the below error message when I attempt to do so.

I recently tried to reinstall Windows on my computer, but it seems like things have gone terribly wrong. Firstly, I had difficulty entering into recovery mode as an error kept popping up saying that a DLL file was missing. However, I was ultimately able to enter recovery mode after connecting a recovery USB. While installing Windows, I accidentally selected the wrong disk, and Windows was installed on my Plex server’s disk instead of the C drive. I only realized this after restarting my computer and seeing two instances of Windows available. Subsequently, I got stuck in a boot loop before turning off the computer and disconnecting all other drives except for the one I intended to install Windows on. When I tried running the installer again, I received an error message, which resulted in another restart. Since then, I have been continuously getting a recovery mode error indicating that a component is missing.

At least that’s roughly what happened I’ve been so busy that I’ve lost track.

Update 2024-05-01T21:40:00Z: just turned it on again to try to get the error code but now its different. Now it says winload.efi is missing (guessing that’s really bad).

What would be the easiest way to completely wipe and reset the SSD?

Sorry friend, I really don’t know what to tell you at this point. Is there a reputable repair shop close by that you could take it to?

Is there a way to format the drive back to its original state?

Not sure what you mean. Isn’t this a self-build?

Yes, you can boot off something else, format the drive, and start again. You have all the usual options, quick format, write zeroes etc.

Or do you mean the reset this PC option in Win11 settings? You can wipe from that and do a cloud install if that option is available. I’ve never tried that on a non-OEM PC.

You seem to have a hardware problem somewhere, you need to take this to someone who has the time and the inventory to swap every individual component out until they can get it working reliably.

Either that or throws it in the river.

I brought my computer back to Canada Computers last month for repairs and picked it up last weekend. It’s now working normally. They found an issue with the power supply, replaced it and also installed it in a different case, which seems to have significantly improved the heat issues I mentioned earlier.

However, I’ve noticed one problem: the UPS that connects my computer and most of the equipment on my desk doesn’t activate properly when it’s disconnected from power. It worked fine until I got the desktop back. Do you have any ideas on what might be wrong?

UPS batteries don’t last long… maybe 5 years max. They’re usually eminently replaceable if you have the skill set. They’re generally a sealed lead acid battery, similar to what is in a car, but much smaller, and come in fairly standard form factors which you can order generic replacements of.

I don’t think the UPS I have has a replaceable battery.

There’s one of two things I can think of for why the battery is not user replaceable:

  1. It’s a cheap unit, and it was cheaper to make it not user replaceable, but you can still replace it, but you’re exposed to all the other stuff inside (which may include the capacitors that you shouldn’t touch. You’re basically doing the same thing as taking apart a PSU at this point.)
  2. They soldered the battery contacts. In this case, unless you have a soldering iron, you have no hope of replacing the battery. Point 1 still applies about the caps.

It takes a certain kind of sociopath to solder lead acid battery terminals.

Unclear, there’s this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRhlE9QjXf8 and these Amazon.ca : cyberpower st425 battery but it’s low cost enough you may just replace it if you don’t feel up to a DIY project.

The battery finder thing that CyberPower has reports his model is not user replaceable.

Yeah, I get that Cyberpower doesn’t want to support that for the lower end models. I don’t think their intention to not support it technically will stop you from trying, but I would have to open one up to know for sure. I have ten year old Cyberpower models that claim they’re not user replaceable because Cyberpower doesn’t want to stock/sell a battery themselves, but yet I have replaced the batteries in two of mine over the years anyway.
