I’ll update this post as I listen, but so far I wanted to say: I never felt more connected to Alex than I do today. I also love the cold/wet months. 6 months of hell and 6 months of pleasurable cold weather. I am a Canadian and 2024 wasn’t cold enough up here in Montreal. I hope 2025 is freezing and dry.
Describing the iPod as a “magic moment” is so accurate.
Fun episode. SS64 is actually really cool. This morning I was looking up the nvram & pmset man pages, so that side would’ve came in handy haha. I love that they give a little blurb at the bottom of every page.
I never knew there was a command called caffeinate. but it makes a lot of sense. I wonder what came first: the mac utility app “caffeine” or the mac terminal command caffeinate sherlock’s the unitility of the app.
Andy’s suggestion of the Black Diamond Equipment Storm is a good one. The Cosmo is also available. @Leo, one of the options is camo. Not quite sure why camo is important. The Cosmo only has a big white and little red LED, but it’s a bit cheaper.
Both of those lights can be bought with a rechargeable battery that’s the same size as the 3xAAA batteries. The Cosmo tells you relative battery strength by flashing the red LED some number of times when you power down. There are a bunch of permutations of the two (distinctly-shaped) buttons. It’s an interesting interface: you can do just fine without knowing the entire repertoire of commands. OTOH, I’m sure many can do the whole set blindfolded and standing on their head. I’d guess Andrew is in that camp.
The main downside is that the rechargeable batteries use a micro-USB connector to charge. That creates a drag, but they’ll also get pushback when they do change. BDE: it’s time to rip the bandage off. USB-C will salve your wounds. Do it before the EU mandates you make the change.
Interesting pick of a compendium of bash commands, Leo. When I used to go into Apple stores, I would fire up the Tower of Hanoi in Emacs – all from a command window. For my MP test, I’d fire off multiple shell windows each running the ToH in Emacs. I think that Apple got annoyed by that; they no longer provide a command terminal version of Emacs and require you to download an App (which you cannot do in the Apple Store). Oh, well.
According to ChatGPT, the caffeinate App came first. OTOH, I never really trust ChatGPT unless I can independently verify.
