Windows gets a new utility that most users probably can't make work

Windows 2004 has a new utility in the Windows Store for file recovery. Turns out, according to Ars, that it may not work for many people because of TRIM being used on some drives. (Apparently SMR spinning drives even use TRIM these days.)

In my own experience playing with the tool, be warned that if you do install it, you need to install it in the admin account and not in your user account (although Windows Store won’t inform you of this.) When it runs, it needs admin privs, and the way Windows Store works, each user profile gets their own cached copy of an install.

I’ll have to give this a look. I heard about it earlier today and thought about a corrupted HDD I need to get some files off of. I guess I have my July 4th afternoon planned.
