UPDATE: Power is back. We resume our shows at 10:30a Pacific tomorrow

LOL!!! That’s GREAT!!! @JeffJarvis

Please help me (as an east coaster) understand this. If the studio in Petaluma has no power, how does Leo have power at home? Due to solar, or was not all the power cut?

I’m guessing he has a generator. But then how does he have cell or Internet? @Leo please let us know!

I think he has said that he lives in the country. Maybe he is just outside of the affected area?

Cell tower is my guess. Same up here in Canada last year. Lasted an entire 4 days.

Hoping I have successfully uploaded a screen capture of the PG&E outage map for Petaluma. If you follow Route 101 down past Liberty, the studio is roughly where the next “101” symbol is on the map. This suggests that it’s only properties north and east of 101 that are out, and that leaves a lot of Petaluma that may have power.

Regarding cell reception, the phone companies have said they would be keeping as many cell towers operational as possible using batteries and generators.

Mobile only? Cross policy blocked? It’s a wonder PG&E is still making money!

Thank you for the screen shot.

Well PG&E has been sued into bankruptcy protection because of the fires so they really aren’t making money :stuck_out_tongue:

Not going to lie, I haven’t read all of the numerous posts here yet, but I wanted to post this link, which I believe may be relevant:

The irony of this is that both the office park in which the TWiT Studios are located and our house have underground power supplies. The problem is the long-distance transmission lines that supply our power and go through (apparently) the windy fire-prone places.

Even though our house is close to TWiT we still have power. TWiT is right on the edge of the outage area. The Brick House would still be online, too.

I am surprised that the west side of Petaluma and its immediate outskirts get their power from different lines than the east side. But PG&E isn’t exactly forthcoming about all this, and we trust them about as much as we do Washington DC.

Well, lets be thankful for small favors then.

Running on generator for a few days would be quite a feat. Too bad the power is out on that side of town. Fortunately, no fires, though.

Shame this didn’t happen a few weeks later. Would’ve been the perfect opportunity for a candle lit TWiT in the spooky dark studio.

Run a really long drop cord from your house

Ignore what I said about wood pole lines, that’s only the local stuff and I was misled by news sites always picking illustrations of them for articles about line repairs. Long distance is proper steel towers but PG&E has a big maintenance deficit so that’s definitely a factor in the decision.

There have already been a number of fires in the last 24hrs that have been caught and contained by fire departments so I guess anything that reduces the risk is good after what happened last year. People lost so much. I really want everyone up there to stay safe until the danger is over.

Interesting tweet regarding why PG&E is doing these shutdowns and bankruptcy has an effect:

I like to think Leo is so dedicated that he made Mary Jo and Paul sock puppets, and is simulating Windows Weekly for just his family (Mary Jo just hit the gong because Paul was ranting about Xbox). Up next: a special LEGO version of TWiG in the brick house.
