TWIT 948: Schrödinger's Server

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I know its fun to bash Elon, and it’s probably good for views as well. I think you’re missing some of the transformation that’s slowly taking place on Twitter (hard to see thru the noise). Twitter has always been good for breaking news, but I think the new/old tools are being used in novel ways to make breaking news coverage even better.

This weekend, it became very clear to me that Twitter will someday begin taking views away from mainstream news. The Israel invasion was being covered in one space the entire weekend! It was a rainy, nasty weekend, so I was playing COD with either CNN or the Twitter space on as background noise.

I can say that the Twitter space was giving far better and more up-to-date information than CNN. People living in Israel reported in real-time. The Iron Dome battery near one of the speakers went off, and you could hear it. Since the speakers were residents, they could speak and compare the attack to ones in the past etc etc. One of the speakers had friends missing from that rave that was attacked and spoke about efforts to contact them.

The space had speakers from both (political) sides of the conflict. The challenge for the host was keeping people on the path of reporting facts rather than diving down the rabbit hole of Middle East politics. From listening to both sides speak, you can understand what a challenging political situation it is over there.

In real life, if you hang out with idiots, your life gets shaped by them. In order to get the most from Twitter, you need to choose who you hang with by using follow, mute, lists, and bookmarks. Of course, it’s something you need to stay on top of so your feed stays relevant to you. I don’t think its quite the dumpster fire people say it is.

Yes, well it has really broken it this time. You just get a meaningless picture, no text, no context, pretty pointless. In a lot of tweets, there was a woman in leather trousers and a loose top, nothing to give the image context, only if you clicked through did you find out it was about the attack in Israel.

99% of the time, when I’m looking for news, I am in a situation, where audio and video are not an option, I need a concise textual summary.
