TWIT 895: Eastern Blocks

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Elon’s racist robots? Come on that was uncalled for and unprofessional.

Tesla events are 180 degrees out of phase with Apple events…unfiltered and raw. I kind of prefer that because I want to see under the covers.

The robot demo is what they thought everyone wanted to see, so they brought one (IMO). The good stuff was where they showed the process they use to map complex intersections using language processing AI. Or the occupancy network that shows where it’s safe to drive/walk in real-time. Even the process they used to pick/design robot actuators was interesting.

Their system takes input from a bunch of cameras and in real-time creates a “grand theft auto” style simulation where it can predict what all the people and animals will be doing. Then it can tell the wheels/legs to move in a way that does not hurt anything.

As a software engineer, this " GTA framework" (vector space) gives me a sandbox where I can focus on solving a single problem (unprotected left turns, complex intersections, etc). Tesla seems like a very intimidating environment to me. I think the event softens that just a bit…a little peak under the covers to see where you might be able to offer value. This was a recruiting event right?

I didn’t listen to the episode, so I don’t know the context for this. On the other hand, it’s a known issue that there were pretty severe problems with racism in the Tesla manufacturing facilities. It’s been well implied (I don’t follow closely enough to know if finally proven) that management knew about the racism, but let it persist. So, since the CEO is responsible for everything the company does, it’s hardly a stretch to assume that Musk has no problem being associated with racism, and thus any project he touches also becomes so tainted.

It was just a snide comment made by one of the guest hosts. I think it detracts from the work being done by the engineers at Tesla.

I’ve been at a point in my life for a while now where someone’s brilliance or genius or expertise is far less important to me than what kind of person they are, and how they treat others who are not their equal in a particular area.

Elon Musk may be a genius and a brilliant man, but he’s also an a**hole. The last attribute is far more consequential to me than the first two.
