I am continually disappointed at the amount of FUD surrounding Recall. The security concerns have been addressed to the extent possible. If you trust your iPhone with its Secure Enclave, you should trust Recall on a Windows CoPilot PC. If you were inclined to trust Apple Intelligence because it does the processing on the phone, you should be willing to trust Recall because of the same reason. It’s the same kind of technology. I would suggest it’s even more trustworthy because Microsoft tends to be more transparent with their bug reporting and patches than Apple does, but that’s me.
The Enclave is something very different, it is more of a TPM module with extra features and more security. But I agree with the rest of your post.
The only thing about Recall is that it is local… For now… With Microsoft, you never know. But in its current form, it is more secure than the data it has indexed - the browser history is not encrypted, the documents you have edited are, generally, not encrypted (beyond BitLocker), mails in the mail program are not encrypted etc.
If a hacker gets access to the PC, they can access the source documents and the browsing history a lot more easily than trying to break the Hello ESS security around Recall data.
And I say that as someone who doesn’t want Recall and doesn’t use Windows, currently.
The issue is the device itself, and if someone gets on it can they extract it.
Sure, but that’s the same issue with iPhone too. Or, with any computer really. If all of the security protections are circumvented, then yeah - that’s a problem.
