TWIG 773: Mouse Jigglers and Keyboard Strokers

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

One clarification on this episode, the Solicitor General is not a general and calling them that is a relatively recent, and in my view unfortunate, practice of abbreviating their title incorrectly. By contrast, the Surgeon General is a Commissioned Officer in the Commissioned Corps of United States Public Health service. The US has eight unformed services: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corp, Coast Guard, Space Force, USPHS Commissioned Officer Corp and the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corp.

Why USPHS and NOAA have commissioned officers I have no idea. Also, oddly the official rank of the Surgeon General is Vice-Admiral.

I was shocked to learn in this episode that Leo suffers from tinnitus. I’ve been listening to him for decades and had no idea. I also note that he mentioned he was trying the Lenire device for treatment. For anyone out there who is considering the same, there is a considerable amount of anecdotal evidence that it is a load of hokum. See for example this page on the TinnitusTalk community website. The “evidence” the manufacturer relies upon is very dubious given it had absolutely no placebo control. The development history of the device is also very suspect (it’s a long story).

The good news is that the underlying principle of the device (bimodal stimulation) is sound. Professor Susan Shore formerly from the University of Michigan published a ground-breaking research recently that has spurred the commercialisation of a device that is likely to actually work in lowering people’s tinnitus. It’s currently pending approval with the FDA. Fingers crossed!
