Regarding the TP-Link router topic and router firmware updates in general:
Most “normal” people have an ISP-provided router, and in my experience this is usually a lowly non-retail device by TP-Link or Huawei, that does not auto-update and for which no updates are available on the manufacturer’s public website. Most users will rely on the ISP to test and apply firmware updates, probably via a WAN facing management interface (not a good idea). I know it’s in the ISPs own interest to prevent their customers router becoming part of a botnet… but judging by the number of unpatched devices out there this will always be a problem.
