Does anyone have any suggestions for a camera strap not worn around the neck? As much as I love using my DSLR, the pain I’m in after wearing it around my neck for a couple of hours is terrible.
Just curious if you can have any idea where you might like to strap it to… maybe you want an oversized “fanny pack” to strap it to your waist? It seems a bit big/heavy to strap to your wrist. I don’t really think there are a lot of great options for ways to carry it so it’s not accidentally drop-able but still readily accessible if you feel the need to grab a snap.
I use wrist straps on all my cameras. This one cinches up the more you pull it, so it’s strong enough to let the camera dangle if you are doing something else.
Rope ones are probably more comfortable than nylon/leather.
I don’t know. I was hoping that some of the photographers on this board might have other ideas. A quick Google search found me some harnesses.
A wrist strap is definitely something to consider.
I also have PDs sling strap. That’s the one you can wear cross-body, and the camera either sits on your hip or in the small of your back, lens facing down. I didn’t really get on with it, but another option. I found the camera bounced around too much, especially with larger DSLRs.
I haven’t carried a dedicated camera in a while but the wrist strap has my vote, that’s what I used with my old Canon EOS.
I would also suggest there are smaller/ lighter cameras to consider. Sony has some fairly capable smaller and lighter cameras, based on the one my friend used to carry. I don’t remember the exact model, but I think the Sony A6400 in in the same range.
A wrist strap is one option. An over-the-shoulder strap is another. It’s a matter of preference.
I use a single-shoulder sling-bag (like a rucksack, but it only has one strap and goes diagonally across the body) and I keep the camera in the bag, then swing it round and place the neck strap around my neck and lift the camera out of the bag, which is at chest height in front of me, when slung around, take my photos, then place it back in the bag.
That means, for most of the time, it is like a backpack, but for the 10 minute or so periods where I am taking a bunch of photos, it is around my neck, then it goes back in the bag, which is better balanced.
I’m with @Jamze for when I’m not using a neck strap or my Spider belt.
I use the camera clip from Peak Design sometimes when using a backpack.
I took the neck strap off my camera, took two short straps and put clips on each end that I purchased from Tandy leather. I clipped it into the d-ring on the shoulder straps of my Camelbak. I have a zoom lens when I need both hands for climbing to catch that bird shot LOL…. I clip the waist strap over the lens as it hangs down. And the bonus I have water on my back.. definitely has saved my neck…
