MBW 789: The Knitters of Newfoundland

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Rene’s recommendation for the AIrPods beanies @1:58:18 included the zinger “We call it a tuke in Canada.” Brilliant. I was sitting around listening to the show wearing my Sugoi MidZero Tuke – and I’m not even Canadian. There’s even a ponytail version to keep your ears warm without getting your hair into a bunch. It almost makes you want to emigrate.

Does Rene use one of these for his jaunts around the streets of Montreal? Asking for a friend.

Have we left behind the casual user on this show? Everything seems to revolve around maxed out machines, and subjects Alex covers on his ever oft-mentioned Office Hours. Lori, and even Andy used to help keep the show interesting to non-pro users, but now it’s all about expensive set-ups. Or maybe it’s just me…

Must admit I thought that the other day. Maybe the Apple shows could be split consumer and pro rather than iOS and macOS? To be fair, Apple has just launched new pro devices though.

The thing is, we have been in the MacBook Pro pro-Level hype for the last couple of months. Now they are here, maybe we will see the show return to more normal levels.

I wonder how the eventual reviews will measure up to Apple’s hyping these as so fast. If they’re as fast as promised, it’s mostly because of the RAM being un-upgradably on the die with the SOC. I wonder if Intel and/or AMD will find a way to convince average users that less upgradability and less repairability and less choice is actually something they’d accept in order to make the processing faster. Maybe the upcoming switch to DDR5, PCIe5 and USB4 for general processors will make up for the differences. I’m also interested to see what results come from AMD’s approach of putting cache RAM as a 3D layer on top of the CPU. (Which is rumoured to be the next “advance” for the Ryzen 6000 (which will be Zen 3+.) I guess time will tell.

Most laptops are already non-upgradeable, even with discrete components.

Yes, both you & Jamze make good points regarding the release of the more powerful machines. I realize it’s tough to have the show cover the gamut of inexperienced users to “pro” level users, but the deep dives have been toward the “pro” for quite some time. I’m no expert, but I can kind of keep up. Those who are looking to gain some knowledge just beginning on the Apple path must feel they’ve jumped in the deep end of the pool. On the shows where Alex is controlling the narrative on high level use & production, you will note that even Andy is quiet for long stretches of time. And please guys doing the shows, stop throwing around the large number of dollars you are spending. I’m in the Andy camp as far as monetary constrictions. I’d like a new iMac, but even a basic one is coming in at $1500 with one (or maybe 2) ports on it. Apple is starting to price me out of their products, which I’ve already been willing to pay too much for up to now…

Yes, as a non-user of laptops I keep forgetting that these are, and that many people want, faster laptops, even if not upgradable or repairable. Then there is me, still rocking a desktop computer in a case that I bought to build a machine for Windows Vista in 2006 or so. My last laptop had one of the early AMD 64bit processors, before Intel caught on and did the current Core architecture. I admit I just don’t get the appeal of lugging a computer around, I’d rather go to my desk, work in a properly comfortable/ergonomic chair and leave work behind when I get up and go do something else, rather than lug it along with me.

When an iPhone comes out the conversation is more accessible. This week we’re talking about pretty sophisticated silicon. It will vary with the products Apple releases.

Having said that, the only beginner show we’ve ever had is the Tech Guy. I assume that our audience is smart and interested and I never want to talk down to them. These aren’t intended to be tutorials.

The problem with targeting neophytes is that they don’t stay that way for long. Which is probably why you see a dearth of such shows. You’re never going to see a “Understanding football” show on ESPN. And we’re not going to show you how to format a hard drive. These are programs for enthusiasts.

But hang in there - I’m sure you’ll be up to speed quite quickly!

Mikah and Rosemary do an excellent job on iOS Today speaking to the everyday user as well as covering more advanced stuff. Given the range of coverage as well as the huge iOS user base, it can be a good formula for them. The target audience for “everyday” Mac users is decidedly smaller.

I understand this is not Apple 101. I’ve listened for about 4-5 years. Of course, listening & knowing how to do all the stuff are 2 different things. I watch This Old House, but can’t screw in a lightbulb! There has definitely been an uptick in the technical level of discussions since Alex came back. For those interested, it’s valuable information. We all adjust, and I am now probably more in tune with iOS Today. I will never do the work that Alex does, never have Leo’s expertise level, never be as devoted/interested/knowledgeable about all things Apple as Rene, or have the years Andy has put into tech. I just liked listening to all of it, but now it just has morphed into a discourse further out of my interest/capability level. P.S. Leo, you should be enjoying your vacation, not replying to my curmudgeon posts! Peace!

It’s always a challenge between letting our hosts talk (sometimes obsessively) about their favorite topics, and guiding them gently into a possible more general area. I certainly err on the side of the former, unless it’s comic book chatter. Alex has clearly been influenced by the advanced nature of the topics on Office Hours. I’ll try to bring him down to earth, but honestly I’m always amazed by his expertise.

Now back to the Dia de los Muertos, which is already in progress!

Not nearly as nice as the AirPod beanies but this ugly case holds a tracker.
