WW 935: Don't Spritz Yourself

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

As a long time Windows user/sufferer I commiserate with Paul in his frustration with Microsoft’s lack of consistency. I really enjoy his rants on various subjects: “it makes no sense”!!!. It always makes me giggle when Paul says “inshirtification” in place of Cory’s now well-used term when he’s quite happy to use other swear words - a couple of episodes back I’m sure he used WTF in its fully expanded form in a rant about alarms. Anyway keep up the good work and swear as much as you like!

I usually go along with Paul’s rants, because he’s one of the best Microsoft reporters and analysts out there.

But I disagree with him on the Surface Neo idea. Some of that, admittedly, comes from my own wants. I see some value in foldables and would love to see a foldable dual-screen tablet, but in the size of something like an iPad mini. I have an (incredibly) aging Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite that I purchased in early 2020. My primary use case is reading, with some occasional video streaming. I would love a dual-screen mini-tablet because of the reading use-case.

I do think that a ‘full-sized’ tablet with screens the size similar in size to a Surface or iPad would be too big, but a mini-foldable with screens the size of an iPad Mini would be really nice.

I remember using the Acer Iconia, one of the first dual-screen, all-screen Windows laptops. It was a fascinating concept and I loved the idea, but actually using it was a nightmare, I’d certainly not have bought one, typing on the screen is not pleasant, it is fine for a bit of searching, but given my job involves writing thousands of words a day, plus posting on forums like this, it would drive me mad!

The Acer Iconia! Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time!

Yeah, those early dual screen models were not that good. But I think the underlying tech has gotten good enough to make those things a more viable option, especially if there are good use cases. I would want to use a dual-screen mini-tablet device predominantly as a reader/consumption device, and secondarily for other things like email. Something like the Surface Duo, only larger to about 8 inches or so for each panel.

I’m still not convinced by folding devices. I’ve used a few, but all I can see if the fold when I use it - once you notice the fold, you can’t not see it, or at least that is how it is with me.

Rumours say that Samsung has made a screen for Apple that doesn’t have a fold/crease, if that is true, it might make future devices much more desirable.
