What to call AI

Bill Thomson on the BBC’s Digital Planet calls AI Applied Statistics. I think he’s right.

Machine Learning is applied statistics. ML is not actually what people think of when they think of AI, even if it appears to be that way. [Most] people think of General AI when they think AI. As in a machine that is so human like that it could replace one and pass a Turing test.

I’ll take anything aside from AI. Such a misnomer.

I’ve always been a fan of the term “VI” as in Virtual Intelligence, a concept from the Mass Effect game series - Virtual Intelligence | Mass Effect Wiki | Fandom. I think it fits what we have today very well.
