MBW 809: As Tall as a Middle Finger

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

While I haven’t watched “Severance” yet (it’s on the to-watch list) I have watched “The Afterparty” and found it very enjoyable.

And sorry, don’t care about “Ted Lasso”. Never seen it, never will.

Universal control works like magic. Has to be enabled on both systems.

Also has no issues with external displays.

Still can’t get it to work with my 14" M1Pro MBP and iPad Pro. It’s very weird. I’m going to take them to TWiT to see if it’s something my Ubiquity router is blocking.

OK I just tried it with the iPad Mini and it worked! So it’s something going on with the iPad Pro. Hmmm.

Interesting - I can’t airplay to the iPad Pro or use Sidecar with it. I’ve done that before but not now. Connecting a cable. Let’s see. OK now this is really screwy - the iPad Pro can mirror to the MacBook but not viceversa. The MacBook doesn’t see the iPad under any circumstance even when wired.

And now it won’t work on the mini either!!! Well after all it is a beta feature. There’s probably something blocking it.

I am using a Mac mini (2018) and a MacBook Pro (2017) across 3 external displays.

Be sure you are using the same Apple ID on both. Reboot your iPad’s.

From PCMag:
You must be signed into each device with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. Each device must be within 30 feet of each other with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff all turned on. Finally, your Mac or cellular-enabled iPad cannot be sharing its internet connection for this to work.

36 minutes in and barely heard a word from Andy or Alex. Nice to have a guest, but jeepers…

Sorry, @Leo , I just turned on my Mac and went into display options and selected my iPad… et Voila, I had a second screen on my iPad.

The one downside is, it tried to turn on full magnification on my main screen, so I ended up with 96pt system fonts! Even clicking on the lowest magnification (100%) didn’t help, I had to quit settings, then open again. (with a 43" 4K monitor, you don’t really want any magnification!)

It works very nicely, so far. Mac mini is on Ethernet and the iPad on wi-fi - something that Windows and my old Samsung Galaxy S20+ could never cope with.

Be patient - they’ll show up.

When Leo referred to the 24" iMac as an “iPad on a stick,” I was happy that I was listening on a bike ride, not at home where my wife could hear. I think she might take exception with that description after shelling out $1700 or so on one, and surprising me with that as a Christmas gift. Especially since the last Apple gift she gave me was the 2020 iPad Air…

I’d love to have the need to use the the shiny new Studio machine, or at least the money to toss at it, just to have the best and newest. But I, as I suspect most people, will be well served by the basic M1 iMac.

I thought Mark was great. I wouldn’t want MBW to do rumours every week, but once in a while v. useful to cover what Apple might be planning long term.
