@JasonHowell your explanation of the disconnection of the buds is priceless 
On a serious note was the disconnection indoors or outdoors?
With bluetooth it is better to have obstacles to bounce off. IE walls furniture etc.
The next thing maybe to check if possible is what protocol the buds are using to talk to each other?
Master/slave (tech term not mine) or individual using BT
Just some thoughts

I have now experienced it outdoors and indoors. My understanding is that the Pixel Buds talk independently to the phone via bluetooth. That would make sense considering each one can operate on its own independent of the other for mono playback.
