Seems like the headline is clickbait - I don’t have a WSJ subscription so can’t check the original, but the linked article and several other sources all say that it’s primarily game companies offering rewards to people watching games being played. Here’s hoping it’s not the thin end of the wedge.

It feels to me that they’re full on the en💩ification path… Start off offering something for free, then slowly charge for more and more and more until there is nothing of value left unsqueezed.

Bits ain’t free, and Discord has an awful lot of them.
As long as they continue to offer a clean experience to users who are willing to pay for their services, I can’t fault them for trying to turn a profit.
