Updating old iMac with SSD - how to format it?

I am looking to update my late 2012 iMac 21.5" internal hard drive to an SSD. I can find a lot of instructional videos on how to do this, but they don’t seem to mention how to format the new SSD…as in should I clone it from my current internal hard drive with MacOS on it or should I simply format it blank?

Thanks.

Just clone the drive. It’ll be fine.

And that won’t interfere with the small SSD part of the Fusion drive that is already in it?

Oh you have a fusion drive… to be honest if you’re replacing with an SSD, is disable the fusion drive. Having said that, cloning should be transparent and fusion the small cache should not affect the process.
