TWIT 854: Filters Not Included

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

YouTube TV is not the most expensive streaming TV service. DirecTV Stream is $5 more per month for the base package, and it isn’t as many channels as you get with YouTube TV. The next plan up from base is a little more equivalent to YouTube TV’s offering and that is currently $85 per month, going up to $90 per month soon due to a price hike.

In reference to “trusting” an order from Amazon (or even other online sites/retailers like EBay, etc) I ordered a AMD 5700G CPU from Amazon and received the official box but the seal cut and the plastic carrier that holds the CPU (for display out the side of the box) removed. I immediately contacted Amazon, and they apologized, and promised a replacement immediately shipped, but it’s been almost two weeks and still no replacement CPU. I suspect either all their stock was similarly pillaged, or they are having the usual supply issues getting in more stock.

At the same time I ordered the CPU I ordered RAM to go in the same machine. Amazon never gave me an honest estimate when it would arrive, and after I placed the order, it was supposedly immediately shipped, but is not expected before the new year. (Looking like at least a month to arrive.)

This is not the first time for me having a problem with an Amazon purchase. This is the reason why I generally will ONLY buy items sold and fulfilled by Amazon. In the past I got sent some plastic take out containers instead of the computer part I ordered!! I’ve also waited more than 6 months for Amazon to deliver and item. (I ordered two of an item in December and one item came in March and the other arrived in July.)

As for the CPU and RAM, I ended up driving a couple of hours to another city to pick them up in person, which of course means I spent $50 in fuel… and wasted 4 hours of my day on the task.

Imagine what would have happened had I been a “Joe average” grandpa buying the CPU as a gift and not knowing there was a problem until the recipient opened it… That would make me look bad as well as reflecting on the seller. I don’t know what the solution to counterfeit and intentionally damaged/altered goods from online sellers is… but I suspect the first step is to acknowledge they have a problem and to begin to take it seriously.
