TWIT 1048: Tiny Steering Wheel

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Regarding AI indexes, Leo said that if you aren’t in the index you aren’t present, which is correct, on the other hand, if you are in the index, you aren’t making any money.

Paul Thurrott should have been on this show - he is an expert on the Microsoft of the 90s. I think Harry is falling into the same trap that others are, regarding the impact of the antitrust trial on Microsoft. There’s been this move lately to rewrite history to say Microsoft was already on the downward slide when the trial occurred. That is absolutely not the case - and this inclination to say as such smacks of revisionist history.

The consent decree absolutely controlled and impacted Microsoft over the 2000s. The greatest and most obvious evidence of this occurred with the buildup to the release of Windows Vista. Microsoft spent most of the early 2000s shoring up relations with the OEMS. Brad Smith was promoted to General Counsel in 2002 for just that purpose. The OEMS pushed back on the new requirements for Vista because they wanted to keep sales up and not deal with making more secure drivers, which resulted in the horrible “Vista-capable” sticker and the complete hash of the OS release.

Microsoft had to deal with the on-site ombudsman who was there specifically because of the consent decree.

Anyone saying Microsoft wasn’t affected by the trial and the decree has misremembered the reality of the day.
