TWIT 1046: Shrimpspiracy

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I really like seeing Paris on other TWiT shows. Maybe eventually she’ll sit in for Leo on Windows Weekly or MacBreak.

I’m afraid I am on a different page. I think Leo is generally a special case, he’s on most shows, and there is another staff member, Mikah, who is supposed to be available to replace him when needed (for vacations and such.) The rest of the non-staff hosts are fine as occasional guests on the “big” Sunday show (This Week in Tech), but I kinda feel like we already get plenty of them when they’re on the shows they’re already on. I want more variety, not less.

Speaking as someone who has kids, a spouse, a house that needs maintenance, and other activities - I absolutely claim the label of ‘casual’ when it comes to gaming. I will binge play when time permits, but otherwise I typically don’t get more than an hour or two at a time to play. And I absolutely don’t have the time to suss out the one way to get past a boss or solve a puzzle or whatever. It’s one reason why I won’t give Souls-type games a try. I don’t have the time for it. And I’ll admit that I play more for the story.

It is all a ploy for a new comic and toy range, teenage mutant ninja shrimps, and they take on the ultimate evil, Spongebob!

The same for me. I get 10 minutes here or there, maybe an hour now and again. I got into GTA V for a while, during COVID, but didn’t really have much more time than to drive from my garage to the casino, spin the wheel and log out again…

I gave up and started watching GTA V videos - mainly Failrace’s Survive the Hunt and RBS’s GFRED races. StH is great fun and only one episode a month - he has to drive around incognito and his crew have to try and find him and kill him, whilst he is performing tasks or blowing up pink Prius’…

Leo I love you…been following your shows for a decade or more.

You and your hosts are sounding like these guys from the muppet show:

Covering the MacroHard tweet is 10 minutes of my life I’m never getting back. A discussion about AI simulating legacy software systems is pretty interesting. At this point everyone has an old crusty server running mission critical software with no idea what to do about it. Could AI provide a solution?

Everyone gets it you hate Trump, Elon, and many of the billionaire class in tech. Half your audience voted for him and really don’t want to hear the elitist comments that you guys keep dropping, can we please focus on in depth tech news. Some constructive ideas:

#A while back you covered a Tesla lawsuit about FSD. Not a single person on your guest panel had any idea what the state of the art currently is in LIDAR or camera based FSD. How will these two technological approaches affect scale as these services roll out worldwide (Austin Robotaxi, NY Waymo testing). Living in a rural community where the council on aging has difficulty providing transportation services I think FSD would make a HUGE difference. How will FSD affect car sales?

#Starlink internet is a miracle! Rural communities all over rely on it as the only source of internet. Twit is a great place to talk about new service plans. My town had fiber installed so there is plenty of Starlink capacity. They just offered a new price plan ($65/mo) that is cheaper than Spectrum ($80/mo)! Fixed income folks might want to know. They also rolled out a $5/mo standby plan limited to 500K with unlimited data…lot of interesting nerdy options for something like that.

#The starship project is being laughed at as “another” Elon musk boondoggle. Elon does not design the thing he has thousands of very committed engineers that do. It’s not fair to throw shade at a TEST program. The after action reports they publish are full of technical nuggets that would make great news….get Tim Dodd (everyday astronaut) as a guest to talk about it. The falcon 9 rocket brought high speed internet to every corner of the planet…what will the Starship help us do. Will Starlink ever IPO? Is it sustainable with F9? Does it need Starship?

Sorry for being long winded…

Trump’s whims directly impact the tech industry. The capricious nature of tariffs. Elon Musk as some government transformation expert. The nationalization of Intel. All of these are valid discussion topics and inseparable from the political environment of the day and directly affect listeners and tech enthusiasts. And on a network where we are listening to opinions and commentary on the tech events of the week - how those opinions are formed and shaped most certain qualifies as something to be expressed. And if that includes some negative commentary on the actions of an individual - so be it. I’m not particular thrilled with how Microsoft tends to be the butt of jokes (not this week, thankfully) - but they have every right to express it. Same as when Tim Cooks gifts something to Trump that would be tantamount to a bribe were it given in cash equivalent.

And while 50% of the country may have voted for Trump - that may not transfer to 50% of the audience. I don’t think Leo collects political affiliation during the annual TWIT Listener Survey.

I agree with the Statler and Waldorf comment about the guest lately. I just find myself getting frustrated with their takes on things, and I just have to stop listening. At least on the other shows, things seem more balanced, I guess.

Given that a significant part of his audience doesn’t live in the USA and therefore couldn’t vote for either side, I very much doubt half of his audience voted for Trump…

The MacroHard story was boring, and the whole thing is somehow stupid and not worth the airtime. AI simulating software is one thing, AI simulating a company is something else, and very disturbing, to be honest. Digital twins for manufacturing is already a well established thing, but it is done for the company running the factory, not by its competitors or potential competitors.

It probably won’t last long, as Macrohard Winux is already a Linux distribution, run by someone calling themselves Macrohard. So Elon can’t even avoid running into trademark disputes when he is trying to gain publicity. Does he do this deliberately, to gain even more press, by using existing names for things, or misappropriating names?

I mean, X has always mean unfit for minors, things always had a seedy reputation, when they were called X-rated. Although, looking at much of the content on Twitter, I guess it could be classed as X-rated in part. But X is an awful name idea.

I think Paul Thurrott summed it up nicely on his site a while back, when he was talking about the fanboys picking on him for pointing out what is wrong with Microsoft or for not decrying Xbox everywhere.

A fan or supporter of a product, brand or person, wants that thing to succeed, they want it to be perfect, they want it to be the best it can be, and that means, if there are missteps, those missteps need to be called out.

A fanboy or fanboi, on the other hand, is someone who defends the indefencible, because their “hero” product, company or person can do no wrong.

If the hero is running around naked, declaring how wonderful their new clothes are, the fanboys will agree with him, the real fan will point to the fact that the hero isn’t actually currently wearing any clothes and offer them a cloak to cover themselves up…

Speaking as someone who does have time to waste on this stuff… I absolutely look up guides for certain games! And nobody @ me with “that’s not how it was back in my day” as if Brady Games and others didn’t exist. Using an ML model to get the info is just a different interface for the same thing.

I too am a very casual gamer but I have zero interest in any story… I want a game I can pick up quickly, with easy to use/learn/remember controls… play 20 minutes here or there… then forget about it until the next time it strikes my fancy, in like a month or two. This is why I play double stick shump type games, like Resogun or Super Startdust HD… not so much strategy, just something mindlessly fun to take my mind off other stresses.
