TWIG 656: The Ultimate Ungulate

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

@Leo mentioned the getting approval for porn sites in pubs again :slightly_smiling_face: It’s just tabloid clickbait I think. Pub chains are a nationwide retail outlet that someone bidding for an ID checking service has suggested we could use. Same as UK Post Office Counters are used at the moment.

In some villages, we’ve lost local shops and post offices, and the pub has become a village shop with a post office counter. So it’s not as off-the-wall as it sounds.

More important I reckon to discuss government ID/age checking, and if it’s right to restrict access to websites based on your government ID. I’d like to think I could address that myself with my own kids, but appreciate things are very different now from when my daughter was young.

It sounds to me like this is “think of the children” gone mad. They’ve had SO MANY kicks at this particular can that it’s getting hard to know what is current facts. Based on the date of this article Google found for me, I assume it’s up to date:

This may be fear mongering, but on the other hand, rarely does something like this stay properly contained. I look forward to you having to whip out your CC to verify your entitlement to check the weather

Yeah because I’ve never used my parents things without their permission when I was a small child. I may be 30 now, but I can remember when I was about 10 years old, using my parents card to order diecast cars online. Doesn’t sound criminal, but boy did I get in a heap of trouble for it.

I see age verification basically being a gift card or like buying boxed software in a store. You purchase access to a code, when it’s purchased it entitles you to use it let’s say for the next 3 months to “Verify” entitlement of your age. A child could never find this tucked away in dad’s desk drawer and use it themselves…

30 huh? I’m afraid I’m gonna need to see some ID, you don’t look a day over 27.
