We have an equivalent of the FBI here, in Germany. The company where a friend of mine was working had some contracts in China. At the time, the security expert from the agency told my friend, that he should take a burner phone with him and he should destroy it at the airport, when he came back. The same with the laptop, once it had been to China, never plug it back into the company network, simply destroy it.
That was back in 2016.
The reason the agency contacted my friend in the first place was that the IP address of one of their servers appeared in a dark net forum. The agency took it the drives for analysis (he voluntarily gave them the drives to analyse). Their advice was to shred the server and install a new one, you could never tell, what they had done with it (custom UEFI rookit etc.).
