I was using a third party podcast app my iPhone, but with iOS 13, I decided to Apple Podcasts another shot. I did this primarily because native iOS apps tend to work better with CarPlay than third party apps.
I also started using Apple podcasts on my iPad, Mac, & Apple TV. I turned on syncing on all devices, but I typically only want to watch video podcasts on my iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. I subscribe to the video version of some TWiT shows, but I have them set so that they don’t download. I created a station called Video, includes all podcasts & set Media Type to Video.
So far, it’s working nicely. I never used podcasts on Mac before because it was buried in the iTunes application. Now that the Mac has a standalone podcast app (with Catalina) I enjoy watching video podcasts on the Mac too.
When i first got into podcasts many years ago, I used the stock application on iPhone/iPod and iTunes on Mac. But when Overcast came out, I switched completely to it. I’m sure Marco Arment will create a Mac equivalent sometime, but truthfully, I tend to listen while I’m driving or headphones around the house cleaning.
I realize this an iOS podcast app thread, but as an Android user, I enjoy using Google Podcasts. Been seeing @ant_pruitt’s Twitter posts when he listens to podcasts using Playapod, so I’m going to check that out. Really hoping it has the option to download podcasts automatically, unlike Google Podcasts.
Apple Podcasts for me. Synchs playlists and listening positions across all my Apple products, Airplays without issue to HomePod and Apple TV, and CarPlay never a hiccup. I’ve tried and enjoyed some features of Overcast and Pocketcasts that are unique to them, but went back to the native ecosystem just for simplicity.
Another Overcast user here. Great app, especially the UI and Apple Watch integration. My only gripe with it was at first I didn’t think there was a way to see all recent episodes from all subscribed podcasts, which is a section in Podcast Addict (my favorite Android podcast app), but then I learned how to use smart playlists. No issues with it now.
Back in the day I used iPodder, but have been using Apple Podcasts app for awhile, however just recently I’ve been giving OverCast a try, so far so good. The reason why, Apple podcast app had a bug where Podcasts that change Album art every episode wasn’t getting changed. Not sure if it’s fixed yet.
I’ve been using Pocketcasts for audio and YouTube for video for quite some, but I might swap Pocketcasts for Spotify depending on where they go with their new business model.
@Scott It is. For iPad OS, anyway; I don’t see why it wouldn’t be in iOS 13, too. They also fixed the problem where video podcasts stopped when you left the app, as well as the widget failing to account for all media when resuming something. Video podcasts automatically go to picture-in-picture if you leave the app while full-screen, as well.
Hi all!
I’ve been using Downcast for years now. Just recently got a new car with ApplePlay. Not quite working out. Am now on the lookout for something else. Maybe try pocket cast?
Used several apps before but finally switched over to Spotify. I have Spotify premium for music anyway, and i feel it finally works well enough to make the switch. Plus I use Android Auto religiously in my car, and while other Podcast apps have AA integration it is nice to have one app for music and podcasts on the screen.
I use Overcast. Use to use Downcast, but switched when it started having compatibility issues with the Waze app in the car. Had to keep manually restart the podcast every time the Waze app spoke. Would have gotten a lot of tickets if I lived in California.
