It’s funny how Jason’s background greenscreen is out of date because he changed his setup
I’m very worried about losing Slide Over in iPadOS 26. I really hope they bring it back. I don’t tile things, I like overlapping windows. I’m sure I can find a more Mac-like way to handle my windows on the iPad but I just feel like it’ll be annoying because I use my iPad as an iPad (ie without a keyboard & mouse).
I frequently use YouTube (or Safari) and pull up Facebook Messenger or Discord in Slide Over, and then quickly dismiss them. There was a year where Apple updated Slide Over to work like the iPhone multtasking; which was a huge paradigm shift for me. I have all my chat apps in slide over while I use full screen apps. I’m worried I’ll just have a lot more juggling to do in order to do the same thing. If Apple allowed the user to move the iPad dock to the side, maybe I would feel less annoyed. I like the slide from the side gesture. It’s a lot easier for me physically than pulling up the dock.
I use Slide Over every single day. There was a year when Apple broke the performance of the iPad Pro 9.7” (before the 2018 iPad) and Slide Over really didn’t work well, I never got used to not having it even though I was using tiling for that year.
I use picture in picture a lot too. I like Jason’s compromise of putting a window off to the side like a picture in picture. In my experience, Apple doesn’t listen to consumer feedback, I’ve never gotten a bug fixed which I’ve reported. So hopefully that’s just my perception and Apple does react to feedback. I’m honestly worried about losing that feature, which is dampening my excitement for windowing on the iPad
With regard to blocking notifications, when I finish work, my work phone turns off all notifications, unless I am on call (one week in six).
My private phone goes silent after 21:00, any notifications or calls after that time are silenced, apart from my daughters and my wife, they can call, but even their notifications in Signal are set to silent.
Edit: it is also illegal to send spam SMS or make spam calls, here in the EU. There are heavy fines for those caught, so it happens rarely. I have received 5 SMS in the past 18 months from phishers trying to get me to log onto DHL, DPD or UPS, I just clocked and reported them, unfortunately you can only report them as spam, not as malware or phishing.
Another banger of a show!
Alex’s notification filtering is something I’m seeing more and more people do. I’ve got a Work focus that auto-triggers based on location, and I recently created a “gaming” focus because it really is a non-stop deluge of notifications these days. The fact that I have to filter things out so that I can engage in a hobby is wild.
I have a friend who went all-in. DND is on almost 24/7 and he’s said multiple times he’s legit happier for it.
They gotta save something for iPadOS 27 ![]()
The only apps that are allowed to make notifications on my phone are the Telephone and Signal, a few others, like my banking app can make silent notifications on the home screen, but nothing else can make visual or audio notifications.
