Regarding Skylight Social: If it relies on a Bluesky login, is it really federated?
Surely all of these services relying on Bluesky user data means that if Bluesky disappears, it all dies right? It feels like I’m missing a step here though.
Well if they’ve got an open protocol and others can get into the network, they may just be the first movers, and more platforms will follow in their lead (assuming the end result is desirable.) I haven’t looked into the protocol to see if it has any reliance on a central party, such as Bluesky… cause if it does, you’re right, it’s just lipstick on a centralized pig then.
It seems telling that no matter how many times I ask in various forums and posts (including those to the Bkuesky team directly); no one is willing to answer what happens if the Bluesky infrastructure disappears tomorrow.
Right now, it just feels more like open development on a central platform and not a meaningfully federated system.
