HOT 213: iMac Storage

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

The lowest-end iMac model (8 CPU/8 GPU) does NOT have a Touch-ID keyboard. IMHO, this is a major hassle. You will have to key in your password whenever logging in, waking up your computer, and whenever you want to use the Passwords app. The only way to get Touch-ID on this model is to opt for the keyboard with Touch-ID and Numeric Keypad – an $80 option. If you get any of the upgrade modules with 10 CPU/10 GPU, they all have the Touch-ID keyboard, a 1GB ethernet adapter, and 4 Thunderbolt ports.

Don’t go with that entry-level iMac without considering its lack of Touch-ID.

We weren’t allowed to use fingerprints or faceID on smartphones until about a year ago, at work. And our Exchange forced the PIN to be “complex” (min. 8 characters, alpha, numeric and special characters), nobody really bothered with the company phone unless it was an incoming call or an emergency.

I had a Mac mini and I use an ergonomic keyboard, which meant I coulnd’t use fingerprint either. I replaced it with a MacBook Pro a couple of months back, so that I could get a fingerprint reader, among other benefits.

Getting an upgraded model with a reader makes some things a lot easier - although you still need to enter the password when you boot or if you aren’t already logged on. (We have to turn our PCs off when we leave the office, so I have to enter my password every morning, but during the day, locking my Air when I leave my desk, I can unlock it with a fingerprint when I return, which makes things quicker and easier).
