A Heartfelt Farewell: TWiT Says Goodbye to Valued Team Members

Thanks for pointing me to this!

Maybe time to stop buying every new gadget and instead using the money to retain good staff.

Putting more behind a paywall only reduces the audience size and the value of advertising. Are there examples of successful paywall supported podcasts?

I’ve followed TWIT since the first episode (and TechTV before that) and fear for the end coming.

Plenty of podcasts use a similar model. I assume they’re successful since they’re still around and I don’t have access to their finances. DTNS is a good example.

Is anyone ever safe at any company?

DTNS is ad supported. Not behind a paywall.

I was a supporter for a while of DTNS, but had to cut back due to my own rising expenses. At the time, the show had ads regardless of whether you were a supporter or not. If I remember correctly - supporters got on-air thanks, invites to private discussions with hosts, and the ability to participate in a monthly end-of-month show.

Not sure what perks are available today.

It’s both, just like TwiT is now. You get exclusive content if you subscribe or you can stick with a more limited, ad supported free version.

You get a longer DTNS daily which includes a pre-show and post-show discussion, along with some subscriber exclusive content.

Another organization with a similar model to TWiT is Pushkin Industries (e.g., Malcolm Gladwell). They have quite a few excellent podcasts with an ad-free tier and free versions with ads. It seems like everyone is trying various models to find something that results in a good economic model. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.

This is the point that some seem to be ignoring for some reason. The industry is young and in the process of reinventing itself. We’re just being taken along for the ride.

I care not about the ad/no ad subscriptions. By paywalled I mean the fact that there are some podcasts that cannot be seen without a subscription. As TWIT moves toward having more of these, the overall audience will shrink.

I’m not aware of a successful paywall podcast site.

I have been a member of the club since it started but hope they continue to have the main shows open to everyone (with ads of course) with the club-only shows be the shorter, more focussed programs that would not draw a large audience. It seems like that is the plan for now. In any case, I enjoy and derive enough benefit from the network to make it worth paying for club membership. However, I realize that is not the case for everyone who watches their shows.

Perhaps some of this discussion needs to be moved to another thread. This is a goodbye thread for those who were let go, not a discussion thread on the value of Club TWIT and its benefits and so forth.

Exactly!

agreed but politics seem to be worming there way into everything

But it doesn’t have to. Many times when it’s come up on TWIT it wasn’t that relevant. Maybe 15% of the time it might be. And even if it does, you can report on it without taking a side.
