WW 976: Full Thurrottle

New Windows Weekly is out now:

So we’re diving deep into Microsoft’s big Windows 11 makeover announcement—and yeah, there’s some genuinely good stuff in there.

:window: Microsoft finally listening on taskbar fixes and File Explorer performance? Could be a real win.

:robot: But here’s the thing—they’re still dodging the hard questions about telemetry, forced accounts, and all that bundled junk nobody asked for.

:gear: We’re picking apart whether this is actual change or just Microsoft rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

:laptop: Plus TypeScript 6.0, Xbox news, and some wild AI chip announcements from Arm.

This one really gets at what Microsoft should be fixing but isn’t. Would love to hear your take after listening.

The pre-show on this episode was very alarming for me. I hope things will shake out and be OK.. Didn’t listen to the episode yet; but I’ve been thinking about that pre-show all day.

I love ExplorerPatcher. Using the Win10 file explorer was a great move. Although I’m a bit excited to see what MS improved with the taskbar going forward.

I wish we could move away from JS & HTML5 / web technologies on the desktop. Get that stuff out of Windows.

I heard they’re also trying to lower the system requirements for Windows systems. Which will be good for the upcoming 8GB of RAM machines to match the macbook neo pricepoint.

Every time Paul says “no apologies” the Bon Jovi song plays in my head.

“and this is all terrible” - Paul Thurrot. God I love him so much.

VS Code recently moved to a weekly cadence and it’s been a bit annoying at work (due to the way the Company Portal works on the Mac) but I love VS Code

Leo is younger than my dad, wow. My dad turned 70 a handful of months ago.

Dang I tuned in about an hour into the show.. what happened?

Leo said this month might be the end of TWiT.

Apparently things went very bad when they outsourced their advertising. I just hope they can course correct. He also mentioned me might’ve been being melodramatic; so it’s hard to really say for sure…. But I would hate to see TWiT disappear in the blink of an eye.

Acorn originally made the ARM chip for a desktop computer that rivalled the Atari ST and the Commodore Amiga.

Yes, some of the recent Dynamic Ad Insertions are a DIsAster. If you read the piece about the new Overcast, you’ll notice that Marco spent an inordinate amount of time performing audio signature-analysis to reverse-engineer podcast DIAs. Overcast will start to make it trivial to scroll past those disasters. Host-read advertisements are immensely better. Advertisements where the panel interacts in advertisement with the host are the best, but that’s pretty hard to pull off.

It’s easy to tell that Leo has been distracted. Leo mentioned that he had bought a one year subscription to the Wolfram Language with AI-assisted code generation. That was about 6M ago; I’m about 95% sure that he has never touched that. Leo has a healthy FOMO, but buying those wonderful toys and neglecting them takes a toll. Did you ever read The Space Merchants by Pohl?

The ad read for Club Twit in this episode is a bit strange.
