I’m going to Belize for a week. Any recommendations for an underwater camera I can use to take video and stills while snorkeling? Some kind of GoPro maybe?
GoPro would work. How are you planning to use it? Leave it running and then take some images from the video, or would you like to use it more like a conventional camera?
Also, do you have a stills camera for the rest of the trip, or does it need cover that too?
If I were going on an active holiday, I’d be tempted by something like the OM System Tough to use everywhere.
I will be moving to semi retirement mode soon and hopefully will be travelling mi. So eventually I think I might move up to your last selection when I feel more comfortable with what I’m doing.
For still pictures while online, I think my iPhone will be good enough for now.
So your first assumption is correct. I would like to wear a GoPro while snorkelling I will want to take continuous video to start with. And I will extract stills from the video as required.
I’m assuming that there are many different GoPro models. Can you suggest one?
Is this a reasonable price for a beginner? I realize I’ll also have to purchase some accessories like a floating selfie stick and an underwater case. These prices are in Canadian dollars.
I haven’t bought a GoPro for years, but am sure both those will do what you want. I don’t even think you need the waterproof case for snorkeling.
There’s a diving & snorkeling section on their website with some ideas on gear.
Let’s try again. Deleted above by mistake.
I’m a little late for the original poster who’s in Belize by now. I’ve done UW photography for decades, going back to the old film Nikonos V camera and external strobe back in the 80s. That was followed up by a housed Nikon DSLR and then smaller point and shoot digital cameras in housings. I got tired of traveling with all the equipment (camera, housing, strobes, batteries, chargers, etc.) and switched to a GoPro Hero12 last year with their housing. I got some great videos and was able to extract stills that I thought were very nice. It was very easy to download the images to my iPad and then do some simple color correction in the GoPro Quik app. I’ve attached a still I pulled from a video I took in Cayman Brac last fall.
Your video looks very sharp!
I ended up buying a GoPro Hero 13 and some accessories. I’m going to set it up after breakfast and give it a go on a snorkelling trip this afternoon. And then while I make a trek through some Aztec ruins a few days later.
I’ve found this YouTube tutorial to be very helpful.
