TWIT 993: The Save Money Button

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Y’all mentioned the NPD leak included US & Canadian citizens, it’s a shame https://npd.pentester.com/ only allows checking for US citizens. I know I can likely just assume I’ve been included; but it would be interesting to know for sure

For me - this panel did not grab me as much as some in the past have. I would have hoped for some discussion on the Google antitrust rulings as they impact the Gemini announcements.

I was also not particularly enlightened by them as to what the difference was between Microsoft Recall and the new features announced by Google. If the issue is consent - Microsoft always had consent in the proposal - it was just originally Opt Out, and they changed it to Opt In. If that was the overriding reason for why people were clamoring that Recall was horrible - that was largely addressed. It still feels like what @big_D said on the current TWIG thread. Somehow Google gets a pass and excitement for doing the same things that Microsoft got reamed for.

The difference is that Microsoft’s Recall captures everything - the new Google feature only captures explicit screenshots. The panel did bring that up.

I must have missed that in the discussion. Thanks for that, @Leo.

True, although you can black and white list applications with Recall, but what more than negates that is that Recall does it all on machine and it should stay there, Google sends the results to the cloud…

I will be interested to see how Recall actually works, once it is available on actual Copilot+ PCs, whether it is the disaster that Steve said it is, after analysing the reports from people using unofficial versions on non-compliant hardware, or whether the additional security on Copilot+ actually makes a difference - I’m going to guess the truth will lie somewhere in the middle.

But Google sending their data to the cloud is also a big problem.

I wouldn’t trust or use either system, from what I’ve seen of them so far.
