FWIW Amazon claimed they notified Parler of violations multiple times over more than a one month period.
Before this thread gets locked down too, as always happens when conservatives come to spout half-truthes let’s be clear about one thing.
In the US free speech has nothing, whatsoever, to do with your ability to say what you want when you want how you want to whom you would like. It has to do with protection from the government blocking your speech. As Amazon, or Twitter, or Facebook, or even your local coffee shop, are not government owned entities, they don’t owe you any right to speech. If you bring a megaphone to Walmart and start going on about something you’re concerned about, Walmart will call the cops and have you removed, possibly applying a protective order preventing you from returning. If you do the same thing in a public (government owned) space, then you have rights to speech, so long as you don’t break other laws (such as, say, smashing windows or committing other crimes.)
If the [former] President wanted to have a place to spew his stupidity online, he could have used a number of government websites to do so. Hell, he could have funded a government run Twitter competitor. The problem with that idea, of course, is that it would have been government run, and then its users would have had rights to free speech guaranteed by the US constitution.
For “conservatives” use “Trumpers.” I think it time for conservatives to purge that particular cancer. Unfortunately, Trumpers have infected the entire nation. Even here. -sigh-
There’s room for both points of view. They may be one of the most valuable companies in the world, and wildly successful, and still be a bunch of arrogant SOBs. Your argument didn’t disprove hers at all.
It’s part of their lawsuit? Okay, but how do you know Twitter violated Amazon TOS?
Can you cite a reputable source?
Also, Parler wasn’t terminated from AWS just suspended.
My comment was simply a statement of fact, whether they are “arrogant SOB’s” or not is an opinion, which begs the question as to exactly who are demonstrably the SOB’s within Apple?
I don’t know that there’s a storm happening in this thread, but the climate to polarize was set by the outright lies & misinformation of trump and certain conservatives over the last 5 years.
What do you expect?
Amazon claimed it was hate speech that wasn’t removed that triggered this. During the same time hangMikePence was trending on Twitter. Kathy Griffen reposted that picture of her with a severed Trump head. I’ve also heard various hosts talk about all the hate on Twitter. Especially with regards to gamergate.
Read the case I talked about in that post. It will show you that the first amendment goes farther then just the government in certain cases.
Thanks for sharing that, really interesting.
Two things to the Parler lawsuit.
- They can say what they want in the suit, they haven’t been in front of the court and actually proved that as fact.
- Twitter actively blocks and takes down a lot of content and regularly bans users, when they break the T&Cs and they discover that or somebody informs them of a violation. A lot of celebreties have had tweets deleted, accounts suspended or deleted over the years. You generally don’t hear about minor trolls being suspended or banned, because they don’t make headlines.
Parler were asked to remove offending content in November, told again in December and still hadn’t acted in January, according to Amazon.
Well, you make my point. Apple may be the most “valuable” company in the world in terms of money, but not in terms of humanity and good will.
This, as i see it, is part of the big fight going on in this country…money vs humanity. You could see it pretty clearly at the start of the covid…half the country saying “People are dying!”, and the other half saying “People always die, save the economy!” Obviously, Im on the humanity side.
The BBC R4 Media Show podcast is worth a listen. Amy Peikoff (Parler Chief Policy Officer) was on it. She agreed their jury-based system couldn’t keep up with the amount of content being posted that didn’t meet their own terms of service, although her position seemed to be give us more time to sort it. And then Jan 6th happened.
Kara Swisher interviewing John Matze is worth listening to too.
I see the Parler holding page is back up, using Russian-owned hosting, which is interesting.
Oops, so their CPO admits that they were at fault, that won’t help their case against AWS…
Did you see Tim on CBS this week?
As a conservative I have to say lumping all of us into a category of trumpers is like saying all liberals are Bidumbs. I do support much of the Trump Presidency because he stood for values I believe in. I’m not a particular fan of Biden, and his stance on some policies is the complete opposite of mine which is why I didn’t vote for him. However I will not curse him as he is the leader of this nation. I will however continue in prayer that our leader serves this Nation in the best capacity possible and makes decisions that makes America stronger not weaker. Hopefully Covid will be over soon and we can get the American economy moving again. Again I wish the best to happen under Biden as I don’t want to see America fall but I want to see her Rise again.
Also before anyone gets butt hurt over my first comment RE: Biden=Bidumb…This is something I’ve heard from other conservative friends. I used it strictly to make a point. I’m not calling anyone dumb. Just used it for the sake of conversation.
Were you in favor of any of trump’s environmental policies?
What particular things did you like ?
Can you elaborate on the values of the Trump presidency, and which ones he specifically embodied?
Yes I’m in favor of coal. I have family working in that industry. I’m glad that Trump stood up for American jobs by raising Tarrifs to be inline with the tarrifs we pay other countries. I’m glad that under trump pre-pandemic unemployment was at record lows. Yes I was affected by pandemic both having covid and losing my job.
To me Trump standing up for the American people made me see him as a leader. Also to be clear I don’t support everything Trump did. His last 3 months in office has made him look like a clown. But I didn’t hate nor did I wish I’ll will on Obama. Again I didn’t favor everything he did nor hate it all. I’m a conservative but I do use my brain to decide things not just accept everything the media says.
Wait…are my numbers right? There are only about 50,000 people working in coal industry and that justifies the potential hazard to themselves and future generations? Seem selfish, no?
What exactly did he do to stand up? You mean deflecting away from Russia to point to China?
For the record, my wife and I have always been Republicans. Until trump, and the current leadership of the Republican party.
Edit to add: I do not have a college degree, but I did go back to night school (twice) to change my trade as needed.
