I listen every Monday morning but couldn’t bring myself to do it this morning; waiting for the evening when I’ll have time and space to digest; buckling up.

Felt the same excitement. Usually hear it passing by, catching some but not all of it. This time, I started sipping the episode like good wine, with a sharp pencil and a notepad. (fully aware that none of it matters, but hey)

Leo is right on point. People will only go where all the rest of their friends go. Google built a really nice social network with Google Plus. I was able to make new friends there, while only following what interested me. I could not convince even one of my friends to try the platform. Their response was always “But all my friends are on Facebook.” G+ never was able to get a foothold with a large enough membership for them to make it remotely profitable enough to continue. If Facebook is not broken up by outside forces, they will continue to dominate. If Google, with all its resources can’t topple FB, who can?

Haven’t listened yet, but I’ll note that Snapchat and Tiktok have managed to organically develop their own user bases by attracting newer, younger audiences that didn’t start in Facebook.

I don’t personally need anyone to topple Facebook. I’d rather see its various functions spin out into a thousand different things. I mainly just want someplace to share questions/tips about local events, services, businesses, school updates, etc. Secondarily, a place for regional interests (e.g. mountain biking group). Third, a place to connect with friends/family. All of these could be accomplished through websites or forums, but none of them would make money and they would require actual involvement from site owners/moderators. Maybe we need to bring back webrings, lol.

We’ve been using signal for 2 years (wife and I), plus her work uses it.

Daughters and partners suddenly joined over the weekend, leaving telegram.

Parler was gaining traction because some of the top Conservative Radio Hosts were switching and urging their followers to come with them. Then Parler got cancelled off the internet. I heard that a racketeering investigation is underway.

As for how to fix the social networks. I have the answer. Turn off the algorithm and recommendation engine. Make it where I only see content from those people I follow. If I don’t follow it I don’t need to see it. Sure you can show me ads to buy products or services, but I don’t need to see recommended posts.

I gotta say. I booked that crew on a hunch, before the big news even happened and it was synergy at its best. I knew that episode would be bonkers considering the talents of those on the panel combined with the news that tapped directly into their core competencies. Thank you!!
