TWIT 766: Zoom, But Use Protection

Agreed, and that’s the challenge with World Health. Over 10% don’t have electricity. You’d have to revert to manual contact-tracing on the ground.

All star cast and great show.

The more I hear of you watching a ton of TV (video in general), the more I question my sanity. I only ever watch educational stuff and product reviews on youtube. I used to watch WWF Wrestling in the 90s but that is about the last fictional series I’ve watched. I pay for Prime, Netflix, a ton to Comcast for video I don’t watch (but household family members do). And of course Youtube Premium which I do watch.

I’m certain I had it in January. dry cough, fever, extreme trouble breathing…I remember thinking that I might die. I’ll be taking the anti-body test as soon as it’s made available.

I also wondered the same thing. I had symptoms that made me curious back in December before anyone knew it had spread out of China. They diagnosed it as bronchitis and a severe sinus infection. I have Bronchitis before and it never seemed to last so long. I think I probably coughed for three weeks, sometimes able to get mucus up, but most of the time not. It hit me all of sudden to. Went it to work feeling fine, about 4 hours in and I felt like I had a straw in my chest for breathing. I will also get a test done when it becomes an option to see if I already beat it.

Shame that Trevor Baylis passed away a few years ago; I can almost picture him drinking a mug of tea whilst fabricating a wind-up version of same in his shed.

Legend. That would be brilliant. Solar maybe?

I was pondering responding with a semi-amusing comment relating to us never considering solar in the UK (on account of the typically cloudy weather) and then it struck me that I was pondering all that whilst sitting on my balcony (in Edinburgh), consuming a large gin and tonic and basking in the glorious sunshine (and as proof of same, the below picture was captured - on an antique iPhone - at that very moment; 18:45 BST).

Atypical conditions (the weather, not the gin consumption)!

So, if it does mutate enough so that immunity is short lived, doesn’t that mean a vaccine is worthless? How can you make a vaccine for a moving target?

Will we get to the point were we just say, “oh well, people are going to die of COVID-19?”

Solar was at 6% of the UK’s power generation in the third quarter of last year. I think I remember reading somewhere that modern solar panels can still generate electricity on overcast days.

Renewables reached over 50% for the first time in early 2020 in Germany, according to TV news earlier this year.

That is a really good question, for an immunologist. As I am not one, I can only speculate. The current flu vaccine is made way in advance of need, because it is “grown” in labs and it takes time to produce enough. Someone (the WHO?) decides which strains are likely to be prevalent, and adjusts the “formulation” accordingly. So if the worst case is that covid-19 needs regular booster shots similar to how the flu vaccine works, I presume it would be tracked similarly and the results would be similar… effective, but not 100% so, varying on a year by year basis. That doesn’t sound like a wonderful result, so let us all hope for a 100% effective and permanent vaccine.

Yes, apologies for being so flippant and yes, there indeed are a surprising amount appearing on Edinburgh roofs (unfortunately, my roof isn’t orientated optimally for same). I do keep reflecting on a comment that Leo Laport made on Twit (and also Security Now!, from memory) about the dreaded Bitcoin mining consuming more power than is provided by all the solar panels, globally. I wish there was more mention of that stat’ on terrestrial TV and thus that it could broadcast to a wider audience (including politicians, and the likes).

PS Solar panels in Edinburgh today must be close to maximum output!
