Why does @Leo keep saying that the AIs didn’t escape?
The physical code didn’t move to another machine, but the AI certainly broke out of its restraints, it escaped the restrictions put upon it and got access to the Internet. That is a form of escape.
Just like prisoners “escaping” into their minds, to dream of freedom, when in captivity. They haven’t physically escaped the prison they are being held in, but they have mentally escaped.
There are many variations on the definition of what escaping is, and physically removing oneself from one location is just one of them, but not the only definition.
Like Houdini escaping from a straight jacket, he then has his arms free to help him move around in the water tank and escape from the tank, the first is a constraint he is escaping from, the second is a physical space he is escaping from. He hasn’t left the room, when he removes the jacket, but he has freedom to move again. He can use his arms again. The constraints that were put in place on the AIs were like locking its arms in place, so that it couldn’t use them. It found a way to free its arms and reach out beyond the constraints of its straight jacket and manipulate the real world again.
