TWIT 1043: It All Starts With Baby Shark

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I reckon the uptick in VPN subscriptions in the UK is actually adults not wanting to ID themselves and prove they are over 18 rather than kids getting their credit cards out and subscribing to Proton or Nord.

Of course, people can get around most restrictions, but parental controls (so they can’t change the config of their device without your approval) stops the VPN option, doesn’t it?

I haven’t noticed any differences to any social media platform since this came in last Friday. Haven’t had to prove my age.

Really good panel! Always enjoy Richard Campbell, and both Brian McCullough and Mike Elgin were fun as well. Good stuff.

Glad Leo isn’t getting into newsletters. I don’t subscribe to any, I have no more reading time available, it’s fully occupied. I can manage to listen to podcasts while I’m reading other stuff. And yes, I know it was a joke.

I wonder of newsletters are a generational thing. I noticed everyone that asked if i had a newsletter were of a certain age group. Heck, most days i feel like I’m the only person that uses email dor personal messages if I’m not sending an SMS.

I enjoy reading newsletters though I’ll admit the older I get the more I find my self unsubscribing from some that no longer interest me. I rarely use email for personal communication. I mostly use it for work. The only “Personal” e-mail correspondence is myself communicating with burn camp staff through out the year.

Here, it is all Signal, but, yes, most people don’t use E-Mail anymore.

I subscribe to one newsletter, “Autosave is for wimps”, which started at one email a week, although there is a second that started coming in on Thursdays, but it is a link to an audio skit, Con in 60 seconds.

The newsletter is from Alistair Dabbs and I have been following his writing for decades, but since he no longer writes for The Register, I follow his newsletter and support him that way.

I was only half joking. I’m keeping in mind that it might be difficult for me to do five shows a week forever and wondering what I’d do after that. I’ve saved for retirement, but once I realized that anything I take out is going to be taxed somewhere around 50% I understood that I only have half as much as I thought I did. So I guess I’ll need to work for a living as long as I am able. And then the question becomes, what will I be able to do as I age (and maybe even begin to travel more, at least that’s the dream).

I’m so wed to audio that most likely I’d start posting short clips on my blog (micro.blog actually supports podcasting, and newsletters, so I’m set there).

Or I could become a Wal-Mart greeter.

I have no desire to sign up for a newsletter service. I’m trying to cut down on the amount of email I get, and, frankly, I can’t trust that any service will not sell my information - resulting in even more junk email than I already get. I really can’t see how this is a viable avenue for growth.
