TWIT 1031: My 3 Friends

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

I like all of these people, but there was virtually no discussion on the Apple ruling and their appeal. Discussion immediately segued to Google after a simple mention of Apple. There has been so much to unpack from the judge’s ruling and it’s almost like people actively don’t want to discuss it. Jason Snell said elsewhere that Apple’s executives are behaving as if they are above the law. That’s a discussion worth having, but it can’t happen if people aren’t willing to actually dig into things.

In the Google portion - I’m curious about Stacey’s take that Microsoft has been through so many antitrust trials. I’m only aware of the one back in the 90s, and the recent intent by the government to further investigate them. Are there more?

Regarding Wesley’s statement that government just choses where to point the gun - yeah, that’s true. But there are only so many people who can work on a case (and less so now in the current administration), so the prosecutors have to be selective. That’s probably another reason why some of these cases take so long. You want to make sure you have plenty of evidence and support before you cross that line.

Living in Germany, I’ve had to carry ID with me for the last 25 years. At first my British passport and my Aufenthaltsgenehmigung (resident’s permit), these days my German ID card.

It makes identifying yourself very easy and it can be used for signing up to online services or applying online for loans etc.

In 25 years, apart from moving house or getting married, I have not had to show my ID to any government official, including the police.

Well Germany has excellent privacy protection, unlike the US. That’s has to be a prerequisite for any national ID in the US.

There was a recommendation for a security researcher to follow on mastodon. I don’t remember which show talked about it this week. If anyone remembers that would be great.

Possibly a John, James, other J. (Not for sure)

Probably not who you were thinking of, but I will recommend

Agree that Brian Krebs is definitely no.1 to follow, but I would also suggest the sometimes abrasive but very very well informed Kevin Beaumont:
