TWIT 1019: Nickel for Your Thoughts

Beep boop - this is a robot. A new show has been posted to TWiT…

What are your thoughts about today’s show? We’d love to hear from you!

Isn’t Musk heading DOGE and still being on the board and employed by X, SpaceX and Tesla a classic conflict of interest? In most countries, he would have to divest himself of ownership and employment by those companies in order to work for such a government agency, doesn’t the USA have such basic requirements?

Under the current administration, they are more like suggestions.

In the US you are “supposed” to divest as well. Problem is when the people in charge of that are the same ones doing it.

I was wondering the same thing. Musk is considered a (I forget the proper terminology) “special employee” where he can only be employed for something like 330 days, so divesture is not required. I also believe that Musk is not collecting a paycheck for this job.

But technically, the president is also supposed to divest, or move all of his business holdings into a blind trust. That didn’t happen the first time, I doubt it’s happening this time.

The question actually came up locally. The son of the owner of the New England Patriots is running for mayor of the City of Boston. Since he has an ownership stake in the team, what happens to that if he wins?

On Alexa, I’ve already noticed features disappearing from the standard product and wondered if they were being held back for the paid ‘AI’ service coming soon.

Buying stuff, for example. For years I’ve been able to ask Alexa to ‘buy dog treats’ (or whatever) and up pops my recent purchases, I say buy item 1, it asks for a PIN and job done.

Now all it does it tell me I can go to amazon.co.uk to make my purchase.

You’d think this would be the one feature they would not remove?!

I see the folks at Pine64[.org] appear to be working on a fairly nice looking DiY home voice box.
