This didn’t make it into the show, but was on the after-show. I whipped this up quickly (I wrote the lyrics in like 2 minutes) while Paris was talking about her tree course “New York Citizens Pruner Course”
“A license to prune”
We need more of the Paris Martineau French accent in segments
Miss Paris face at 1:13:53 when Mr Laporte says Lando is cute
Re: the WordPress issue - I sympathize with Matt in the sense that lots of companies make billions off the backs of FLOSS developers. He’s not the first, nor will he be the last, BDFL asking for proper funding. However, he’s not exactly going hungry and his business isn’t hemorrhaging money so some of his complaints fall flat with me.
WPEngine quietly updated some language on their website shortly after all this started, which leads me to believe Matt actually has a valid point about the trademark misuse. But his behavior has quickly overshadowed all of this and become the focus of the whole debacle. People like me will eventually forget about these 2 companies having a money fight over a trademark, but we’re not going to forget the supply-chain attack that was changing ACF to SCF.
He really needs to listen to literally any lawyer and just not talk outside of the courtroom. His attempts to win over the court of public opinion failed miserably.
It has nothing to do with the money he is getting or the money his business is making, it is that he invests a lot of money to keep WordPress being developed and bugfixed further and WPEngine earns a similar amount of money, but doesn’t invest money to keep WordPress being developed and bugfixed.
So he is retaliating in the only way he can by holding the trademark usage by WPEngine to ransom.
But they’re not required to give anything back. Those have been the terms for 2 decades now. We can argue all day about whether or not WPEngine should feel compelled to contribute more, but that’s the rub with FLOSS. Others will make trillions off your work, and may not even give you so much as a “thanks” for helping them out. How much does Apple give to BSD? How much has Google donated to Linux? Is it enough?
“Retaliating” is a good choice of word here, because that’s exactly what Matt’s trying to do. It’s a huge mistake to try and do that outside a courtroom though, especially when you have a pretty solid case. Let the lawyers do what they do!
I have a godaddy Wordpress hosted site. For me it has always worked well. As was discussed Godaddy hosted Wordpress uses WP engine. I’m familiar with the interface. It’s easy for me to change themes and not have to go and update every page. For me it works.
But I’m not downplaying Matt’s right to be upset. If I put in effort and money to make something great and someone came along and was riding my coat tail and not keeping their end of the bargain. I’d be pissed too!
