Be sure to understand what the insuring company will do in such cases. Sounds like you had good coverage with that company. We had a dishwasher insured, supposedly, by our power utility. The contracted company would not pay to fix the dishwasher because it was at least 50% of the value of the washer. OK, but they wouldn’t at least give us anything, not 50% of the value. Didn’t seem like it was worth throwing money their way so canceled.

Whole house surge protection was talked about more in the old TWIT Home Theater Geeks show called power to the people. I know it has out dated information but it’s sill and good sroce to start form.
