I remember years ago, NYC was trying to do the same thing. The people that complained the most: the parents. How would they reach their child in an emergency, etc.
When I was in high school (before cell phones were the thing), if parents needed to reach us, they called the school, which would then contact the classroom the student was in. I don’t see any reason that approach won’t still work today. There is no need for students to have a cell phone on them during school hours.

I think that this is a good opportunity to leverage a device like the Apple Watch which offers connectivity without the added distractions.

I totally agree - our parents never had a problem calling the office to get in touch with us
