The Photo Thread: Week of 2023-07-09

Another more utilitarian photo post. A picture of the recipe and the resulting cookies (with the optional cocoa and without the walnuts.)

The recipe is probably from AllRecipes. I usually find one I like and then transcribe it into a word processor and enlarge the font for my old eyes, but try to keep it all fitting on one page (usually have to reduce margins or condense a few steps into one.)

I make this recipe in my stand mixer, and I use a small scoop (with a blade to help eject the contents) to produce the cookies. I use parchment paper on my cookie sheets to make it easier to extract the whole sheet at once (a quick pull) and for easy cleanup. They freeze well too, so I can make a double batch (about 60 cookies) and put them in about 3 square Tupperware containes… one for now, and two to freeze for later.

To make the photo, I just laid the recipe sheet over the cookies, and snapped with my Google Pixel 6 Pro. I then tweaked the white half a little to get better contrast, and then resized for online.

Very busy Summer here, having the cottage rethatched. Fascinating to watch, it’s a real art.

I keep seeing people complaining about towns and cities being pedestrianised and how it is bad for business, because people can’t park their cars in front of the shops.

In the last 40 years, I’ve always lived somewhere, where the town centre is a pedestrian zone. I wouldn’t contemplate moving somewhere, where I would need to drive into town.

This is my local city. We drive to the outskirts and walk in, or ride the 25KM into the centre with our bike.

Lived near Oxford for much of my life. Wouldn’t even consider taking the car into the city. Good way to waste hours of your day sat in traffic (and fumes)

I presume you mean a pedal bike? Things are clearly different there for you than they are here for me as that seems quite a journey to me.

I have taken up biking again for the first time in decades (new bikes with integrated hub gears and belt drive are very nice, if very expensive.) Almost every night I go on a bike ride around the (very car-centric) neighbourhood… and the trip takes 30-45 minutes (depending on the wind) and averages around 5 to 7 km. I don’t consider myself particularly out of shape or weak and it’s not a leisurely ride but I am not pushing for max speed either.

If I had to go 25km (and return, so 50km total,) that seems like it would take me all day, just for the bike ride, and never mind doing anything when I got there. Plus, going that far, I’d have to plan ahead and pack the side saddle with water/drinks, a snack or two, plus sunblock and other misc things… and maybe even a change of clothes depending on if part of the journey would occur as the temperature changes over the day (like before early morning sun-up or after evening near-sundown.)

With our normal bikes, it takes about an hour and a half, with the pedelecs (assist to 25km/h), it takes around an hour.

My daily commute is 6.5KM each way, that takes around 12 minutes.

With the pedelec, I usually cruise in excess of the 25km/h that the motor assists with, usually around 27km/h on the flat. The manufacturer says the battery should hold for 80km/h in eco mode, but I’m getting around 150km out of it, although I do use the middle assist level for the step climb back up the hill in the evenings.

Given the weather here, I generally have wet weather gear in the saddle bag. Morning at the moment are around 14C (57F) and coming home in the evening, 30C (86F), so I just wear a T-shirt and jeans.

The last shot with the grass is excellent!
