When Steve is discussing the HP printer driver problem, it is unclear whether he is talking about the Microsoft provided, generic PCL driver for HP, Samsung and Xerox or also the “real” drivers that you download from the manufacturer, or both.

Windows includes several thousand, feature incomplete, but fully functional drivers for common printer manufacturers and the common models, when that version of Windows was released. We also sometimes use these generic drivers for other brands, like Kyocera, when their own drivers cause problems with software. They guarantee standard page printing, but not necessarily, for example, colour, collating, stapling, different paper trays, medium selection and print quality, that the full driver would offer.
