Society is funny, we say people shouldn’t give in to blackmailers and pay ransoms, yet we berate companies when they follow our advise and the stolen information is published…
I think more companies should stand fast, but also we need to move away from providing photo ID over the Internet. In Germany, it is actually illegal to photocopy or photograph a government issued ID, for example. When I bought an iPhone on Apple’s monthly payment plan, I had to make a video call with the credit company and show them my ID waving it back and forth in front of my face, so they could see it was me and that they could see the holograms shining in the light. They weren’t allowed to store the images, just make a note that my ID had been verified.
I thought Germany had digital ID? Do companies not use it?
Really bugs me how often I have to take a copy of my paper ID and send it to companies. Who knows how securely it is stored? Also defeats the object of all the security features built into passports and driving licences.
It is digital, but less than 1% of the population has a card reader… ![]()
Interesting. Is the plan to mandate its use at some point, or will it always be optional? Similar is planned here in the UK now, but loads of pushback from people.
The government want people to use it, but not many do. I have the app on my phone, but I haven’t set it up yet, because until now, I haven’t been anywhere that needs it. I did have it set up on my old phone, but never used it, so haven’t set it up on the new one (NFC scan of the physical card and then unlock it with the PIN). I don’t have a reader to use it on my pc it Mac.
I haven’t lived in Germany since 2002 and I have had to provide ID maybe 6 times in all those years.
