Changing the configuration of a computer without the owners consent is illegal, can’t companies behind tools like and Graphite and their customers be charged and taken to court under the Computer Misuse Act or its equivalents around the world?
Regarding WhatsApp, the big problem with it isn’t the Signal protocol, it is how Meta deals with contacts. “Good” services use a hash of your number and check your contacts numbers against the stored hashes on the service, if there is a match, you are informed that your contact also uses the app.
WhatsApp, on the other hand, uploads not a hash of your contacts’ numbers, but the complete contact entry in on your device for each and every contact. What makes it GDPR non-compliant, on top of this, is that all of that contact information is exported from the EU to servers in California, which is illegal, without the consent of each contact stored on the device.
