What is your favorite quote of all time?
Love this one, Mistershipwreck. Here’s mine:
“You must learn one thing; the world was made to be free in. Give up all the other worlds, except the one to which you belong.” – David Whyte
I have a bad feeling about this…
I don’t know if I have a favourite, but this one has meaning to me, as a software developer who spends inordinate amounts of time writing code that doesn’t use null references:
There are so many… An absolute favourite? I’m not sure, but this one always makes me smile:
“Do you know what this is? Hmm? No, I can see you do not. You have that vacant look in your eyes, which says hold my head to your ear, you will hear the sea!” - Londo Molari
This is also good:
“No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms
forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against that power tyrants and dictators cannot stand.” - G’Kar
But I love this one from Mark Twain:
“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
And this one, from my boss this morning.
A user sent an email that their mailbox is nearly full, could we please give him more storage.
“I have increased the storage of your mailbox. In the future please use small letters* and black and white images to save space.”
Had our whole office in fits of laughter.
- lower case, in German, literally “small letters”.
Don’t sweat the small stuff; and its all small stuff.
No matter where ya go, there ya are - Buckaroo Banzai
“Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time” - Terry Pratchett.
To quote a small band from Athens, GA… “It’s the end of the world as we know and I feel fine.”
“The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.” - Terry Pratchett.
“People don’t alter history any more than birds alter the sky, they just make brief patterns in it.” - Terry Pratchett.
A couple Taoist quotes I love:
The realms of good fortune
And calamity in human life
Are all made of thoughts
He accomplishes his task, but does not claim credit for it. It is precisely
because he does not claim credit that his accomplishments remain with him.
Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.
General James Mattis
“From one thing, know ten thousand things.” - Miyamoto Musashi
“Friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant, did you ever notice that?”
― Stephen King: The Body
(aka Stand By Me)
Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason
Two of my favorites:
I always get to where I’m going by walking away from where I’ve been - Winnie the Pooh
I hate failure. The idea of failure is, I think, my driving force - Greg Norman
Gotta love Pooh As for failure, it sucks, but it’s what keeps us humble.
Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamppost: for support, not illumination - Vin Scully
The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new - Samuel Beckett
Men tread freely, that only see the shallows - Ben Franklin
Tomorrow is sooner than you think.
