I’ve met a few famous people over the years, but all informally.

I nearly knocked over Christopher Biggins coming out of the breakfast room in a hotel, I was late and my colleagues were waiting for me in the foyer, so I blindly rushed around the corner and bowled right into him, luckily he is bigger than me. I apologised and ran on, only realising afterwards that it was Chris. (People from the UK, who grew up in the 80s will know him, and he was in the British version of Storage Wars, I think.)

I sat a seat away from Bob Geldof on a flight to Germany and on another flight, I met Ron Dennis and the McClaren F1 team. At the races at Windsor Park, I bumped into the F1, Bernie Eccelstone owner and the Jordan boss, Eddie Jordan.

I’ve always tried to be “normal”, when I meet famous people, because it has always been informal occasions, so I just treated them normally and didn’t go, “Hey, you’re Eddie Jordan!” I mean, he knows who he is! And I didn’t get them to sign anything, because it was just the wrong situation for that. They were all nice, genuine people to talk to, apart from Bernie, who had his bodyguards and entourage around him, so it was just a quick hello as he walked past.

When I was at a concert in Hameln (as in the Pied Piper of Hamelin), I got chatting to the support act, The Young Dubliners, I was the only native English speaker in the crowd around their table and we ended up talking for about 20 minutes about loneliness of business travel, being in foreign countries etc. and they all signed a CD for me as a gift to the girl who bought me the tickets for my birthday. Later, we bumped into Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, whose concert it was and had a quick chat.
