Anyone had this? On a US trip for a few weeks, and have a Holafly eSIM to get me mobile data.
All works fine, except it somehow thinks I’m in Singapore. I don’t mean GPS or time zone detection, that’s all OK. But whenever I’m roaming using their eSIM for mobile data, apps think I’m in Singapore. Does Android get that info from your mobile data connection?
Causes a few issues in apps. Language is wrong, trending in social media apps is the wrong country, but the main one is Android Auto refuses to start up, so I have no nav in the rental car
Holafly customer service has drawn a blank after running through their support script and resetting mobile data settings, checked the APN, turned it off and on again etc.
They probably bought an IP address range from Singapore they wasn’t being used, it the app uses the IP address to try and locate you, it can think you are elsewhere.
I started looking at it, 'cos Android Auto refusing to work is a bit of an issue with a few errands to do in the City this week. I have my VPN running most of the time anyway, but Android Auto errors with that too and tells you to turn the VPN off, so I’m guessing it’s doing some sense-check of where it thinks your phone is compared to GPS.
Hmm, good point. I guess that article has a lot of brands I don’t recognize, such as that one. (I started looking for one I had heard of before that a friend once recommended to me a couple of years ago, and never did find a name that kicked my memory… so I guess maybe they come and go.)
