Netflix VPN/proxy errors and travelling

Any knowledge here of what triggers these errors on Netflix?

We’ve just returned from the US. We watched UK Netflix out there; it worked as expected (with the US library).

Got home, and Netflix won’t work; it says a VPN or proxy has been detected. It happens on all devices and profiles, on WiFi at home or on mobile data on the phone. So seems my account has been flagged?

But Netflix say all OK, says nothing on their end is causing this. Which makes no sense to me!

They started to say it was an ISP problem, but once I said no - my mobile has the same issue - they ended the call.

I’ve checked with their own fast.com site, which correctly shows me as located in the UK, as expected.

I would contact support to end your account. When they ask why, you can tell them you’re getting this error and you’re not going to pay for a service you cannot actually use. Either that will get them to fix it instead of hanging up on you, or else you should actually follow through because clearly they don’t respect you as a customer.

Agreed. Had an email a couple of weeks ago; the price is going up another £2.

His last statement, after running through the help document I’d already read with me, then trying to upsell me to a plan that supports VPNs (I’m not using one), was that this always happens when you change countries and it will reset in 24 hours. So I’ll wait a day.

That’s crazy and would make me IRATE.

Also I never knew about fast.com and I think I actually like that site better than other speed tests.

My understanding of fast.com is it uses Netflix’s content delivery infrastructure. So it’s a useful way of checking if you are having Netflix issues.

I also like Cloudflare’s speed test, as it is hosted in the same datacenters as their CDN.

I remember my ISP seemed to have capped Cloudflare to 10 Mbps for some reason. They have since stopped.

If Netflix says it’s not an account issue (which seems like bs) my guess is your ISP assigned you an IP that has been flagged as a proxy or VPN by Netflix’s systems.

I used to run a Tor relay from my home and there are many services that will automatically block connections from an IP that is part of the Tor network. Even though I was just a relay and not an endpoint

Your ISP may assign you a new IP if you power cycle your on-prem equipment.

That’s what I was thinking. They are blocking my IP 'cos they think it’s a VPN or proxy. I’ve tried turning off the fibre ONU box several times to get a different one, but still not working.

Is there any way of looking up an IP to see if it’s on a block list?

Weirdly, the kids profile works fine; only the adult profiles are blocked, so definitely logic at Netflix’s end is doing this IMO.

In my experience most of the big players like Netflix concoct their own closed lists that you can’t query. You can check the public lists with this site - Email Blocklist Check - IP Blocklist Check - See if your server is blocklisted (note that this site is geared towards email service, your IP will likely show as blocked on a few lists merely because it’s a residential dynamic address and isn’t indicative of a problem).

But if other Netflix profiles work fine from the same network then it’s clearly an account issue that Netflix needs to fix. Seems like their frontline support blew you off. I’d try that route again and ask for escalation. If you still want to give Netflix your money.

And they wonder why we pirate.

I’ve got it working this morning. I don’t know whether travel triggered it and I leaving it for 24 hours, as customer support suggested, or disconnecting all my devices from the settings and starting over fixed it.
